Jo: It’s time to answer another of your questions about British culture inAsk About Britain, I’m Jo.

Jo: Well, we’ve had a question in from a listener of BBC programmes atYunnan Radio and they want to know what house prices are like inBritain?

Jo: So lots to find out – we’d better get started! I spoke to estate agentTrevor Michel to learn more.

InsertThe average house price in the UK is about ?200,000. Where we are in AbbotsLangley, which is about 30 miles from London, house prices are a lot higherbecause we’re close to London so for ?200,000 here you could buy a two-bedroomhouse.

InsertWe have different kinds of houses in the UK – detached, semi-detached or terraced– and you could buy a terraced or semi-detached house for that sort of price. Itwould be at the lower end of what you could spend on a house. For a threebedroomedhouse you’d be spending around ?300,000 and for a four-bedroomedhouse around ?400,000.
Jo: So people are more likely to live in a house in the UK rather than aflat or apartment and there are different kinds of houses.
Li: A detached house 独立结构的洋房 semi-detached 半独立洋房，还有terraced 排房。也就是说两百万人民币的价位，你可以买一套两室的排房或半独立房.
Jo: Trevor said it would be at the lower end of what you could spend ona house in that area.

Jo: On Ask About Britain today we’re answering a question about houseprices in the UK. I asked estate agent Trevor Michel if house priceswere different in different parts of the UK.
InsertYes very different. Prices in the south east near London are a lot more expensivethan they are in other parts of the country because people need to be close toareas of high employment where the wages are higher. So the further you are fromone of those centres the lower the house prices are.
Jo: So basically houses in the south east of England near London aremore expensive than other parts of the UK because a lot of peopleneed to be closer to areas of high employment.
Li: Areas 地区 high employment 高就业率。
Jo: People need to be closer to areas of high employment where wagesare higher. Wages.

Jo: And there is a big difference – you would be able to buy a muchbigger house for your money in the north of England, for example,compared to the south. I asked Trevor how people buy houses forsuch large amounts of money.
3InsertI would say a lot of people tend to get a loan or deposit from their parents andthen they borrow a large percentage of the purchase price on a mortgage from abank or building society.
Jo: So a lot of people tend to get a loan or deposit.

InsertMost people tend to buy a house when they can afford to buy one, whether they’resingle, whether they’re in a relationship but not married or when they’re married sobeing married doesn't really affect their ability or their decision to buy a house inmy opinion. Because of house prices in England I would say that it’s down to bothparties to put the funds together for the deposit and to raise the mortgage on thehouse.
Jo: So being married doesn’t affect their decision or ability to buy ahouse. To affect.

Jo: Trevor says people tend to buy a house when they can afford onewhether they’re single, in a relationship but not married or married.
